Chapter 35

Severed Legion

When I turned to see what was happening, I was glad to see that Laasquo and Wowser had positioned themselves to defend the humans. Wowser was reared up with his claws raised, while Laasquo had positioned herself low to the ground, with her wings spread to act as a shield. For the moment, I could focus on what was coming rather than on what I was trying to defend.

And what was coming was concern enough.

The twitching undead parts that I’d ignored were convulsing across the ground, flipping their way into one giant pile. Most notably, one of the entelodont arms had grafted itself into the pile, and was slashing wildly at Noaich, who was trying to smash the growing ball of rotten flesh with his tail.

“What is this supposed to be?” I asked, taking a defensive stance.

Parker drew her curved blades. “Looks like a big giant target to me.”

The ball flesh—visibly stitching itself together with a peculiar blue-green glow—finished gathering the last of the gross twitching bits of meat. It was almost twenty feet in diameter, and given the number of corpses across the field, it must have been very densely packed on the inside, with the outside just a patchwork of grafted-together chunks. It then did the absolute last thing I expected.

It started to float.

Not just float. Fly.

The chunks of flesh were still twisting and configuring themselves into shape as the giant ball of rot rose into the air. There was a blue-green glow emanating from the bottom of the floating flesh orb, indicating that the flying was coming from the spirits inhabiting the corpse pieces, rather than any biological function.

“Okay, maybe not a target for these,” Parker said, returning her swords to her hips. She fumbled for a moment to ready her bow.

“We’ve got some archers and mages,” Rachel said, starting to circle wide around the floating orb. “We’ll start chipping in—”

“That’s just draw its attention,” I said, catching her shoulder to stop her. “The whole reason I’m here is to keep your people out of danger.”

“What’s it going to do?” Rachel asked, shrugging my hand off. “Just float menacingly at them? I can keep them moving ahead of it. This is basically just a raid boss, right? We fight those every day.”

“I don’t think this is going to be that simple,” I warned. “If things were always that simple, I wouldn’t need to be here in the first place.” I gestured to Parker. “Give it a little tap. I want to see what we’re up against.”

Parker didn’t hesitate, letting loose an arrow at the giant floating orb. A glitter at the head of the projectile told me she was using the arrows tipped by the core-touched shards we’d found, adding a random effect to the attack. As Parker had said, it was a big target, and the arrow unerringly dove into the center of the floating thing.

The arrow struck like a railgun bolt. On impact, it seemed to pick up speed with a sharp PING sound.
